Because a BTU is a BTU...We at San Juan Bioenergy see a future where finding the first, best use for every BTU is paramount to solving our energy shortages. That's why the San Juan Integrated Bioenergy model is so important, not just to us, but to communities everywhere. Rather than trying to find economies of scale by building massive production facilities that require tremendous amounts of energy just to move materials, San Juan Bioenergy's model utilizes local, abundant sources of raw material (crops, ag waste, biomass waste, grease, municipal solid waste, etc) to create the most practical forms of energy (food, feed, heat, electricity, fuel, etc.) for the local community. San Juan Bioenergy's first project is a state-of-the-art oil extrusion and integrated bioenergy production facility in Dove Creek, Colorado. Over four years, local farmers have produced over 20 million pounds of sunflower, safflower and canola that will be crushed for food grade oils and high-value animal feeds. The waste from the process, primarily sunflower hulls, stems and leaves, is converted to syngas which is then combusted in SJB's boiler and gas generator, providing 100% of the process heat and 50% of the power needed for the facility. Waste heat from the process will also be used in both SJB's biodiesel production process and greenhouse Through projects such as the Dove Creek project, San Juan Bioenergy promotes a strong agricultural sector, improves national security, provides air quality benefits, and renewable fuels for a sustainable economy.
